Chennai: Alleging that Tamil Nadu Agricultural Minister and senior DMK leader Veerapandi S Arumugam had violated the oath of office, AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa today demanded sacking of the minister from the cabinet.
In a statement, Jayalalithaa said Arumugam, during the rail roko agitation at Salem on Saturday demanding formation of a railway division there, failed to prevent violence and violated the oath of office.
She said during the agitation, railway engines and signals were damaged, blocks and sandbars were created in the track, thereby delaying trains and causing public inconvenience. But the police did not file any case against anybody for the violence, the AIADMK leader said.
Jayalalithaa said her government had enacted a law making the political parties to compensate for the damages caused to public property, but the law was withdrawn soon after DMK party came to power. The DMK should give up its agitational attitude and take purposeful steps to create the railway division, she said.
"It is unseen in the political history of the country that a constituent of ruling coalition staging protest against its own government," she said, adding that the Centre had announced the creation of the new division on seeing the issue going out of its hands. "This could have been done before the agitation," she said.
