Thiruvananthapuram: Asserting that those who argue in the name of Ram are not upholding His ideals, Union Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said the Supreme Court verdict on the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project (SSCP) would be implemented.

"The issue should not be politicised. Those who argue in the name of Ram are not upholding his principles and are only aiming at electoral gains,'' he told reporters here.

Those who opposed the project did not have the spirit of self-sacrifice, he charged. ''If Ram had been alive today, he would have wanted prosperity of the people,'' Sibal said.

Stating that six routes were, earlier, considered for the project and that one was finalised after environmental clearance, he said it had been finalised by the NDA government. However, he was non-commital about the ''objectionable'' parts in the affidavit submitted in the Apex Court.
