Mumbai: The Sensex surged over 164 points on the Bombay Stock Exchange on Tuesday on funds buying in heavy-weight stocks in the banking and capital goods sectors.
The Sensex, which commenced the day with a moderate loss, surged by 164.69 points to 15,669.12. It touched the day's high of 15,691.88 and a low of 15,468.80 points.
Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty rose by 51.55 points at 4,494.65, after touching a high of 4,546.20 and a low of 4,494.65 points.
The major support to the market came in from banking stocks as bank index gained the most by 199.77 points at 8,290.54, followed by capital goods index by 158.18 points at 13,863.03.
