Johannesburg: Despite restricting the Sri Lankans to a score of 147, Bangladesh could not perform with the bat and lost their decisive match in the Twenty20 World Cup by 64 runs. The Sri Lankans bowled out Bangladesh for a paltry 83 in 15.5 overs.
Bangladesh kept losing wickets right from the beginning and were never in the match after the first one or two wickets had fallen.
Earlier, the Bangladesh bowlers kept Sri Lanka on a tight lease and restricted them to a modest 147 for five, giving themselves a good chance in their second Super Eights encounter of the Twenty20 World Cup here. The explosive Sri Lankan batsmen never got a chance to open up in the face of some disciplined and accurate bowling by Bangladesh.
Both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have lost their first Super Eights matches against Pakistan and Australia respectively and to remain in contention for a semifinal berth, they must win this game. Electing to field, Bangladesh bowlers stood up for the job from the start as wickets tumbled at regular intervals.
Mohammad Mahmudullah's four overs went for a mere 19 while Syed Rasel conceded just 26.
For the Lankans skipper Mahela Jayawerdena (30 off 30 balls) was the highest scorer while Jehan Mubarak (31 not out) and T Dilshan (21 not out) scored some quick runs towards the end.
Sri Lanka got a jolt in the very first over as Sanath Jayasuriya was caught on the boundary by Mahmudullah as he tried to send a Mashrafe Mortaza delivery out of the ground.
Syed Rasel ((1-26) then got rid of Upul Tharanga (23 off 14 balls), caught by wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim. Jayawardena and Sangakkara (20) tried to score quickly but their efforts never bore fruit.
Sri Lanka lost five wickets for 96 runs before Dilshan and Mubarak gave the score some respectability.
