Mumbai: Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Babasaheb Bhosale died here today following a brief illness. He was 86. Bhosale was brought to the Bombay Hospital in south Mumbai this evening where he was declared dead on arrival, hospital sources told PTI.
He was Chief Minister from January 21, 1982 to February 1, 1983, during the period which was described by his rival as a "comical interlude" in Maharashtra politics.
Bhosale took over from A R Antulay as the Chief Minister when Indira Gandhi made the surprise appointment.
Bhosale was later succeeded by Vasantdada Patil.
He began his legislative career after being elected in 1980 to the state assembly from Nehru Nagar, in suburban Kurla.
He also handled law and judiciary, labour and transport departments when he first became minister.
