Ahmedabad: In a bid to woo farmers ahead of the state Assembly elections scheduled by year-end, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today announced a Rs 1,219.57 crore package which will waive old debts of farmers and strengthen their cooperative banks.
"The revival package will help hundreds of debt-ridden farmers," Modi said addressing a public meeting in Visnagar town of Mehasana district of the North Gujarat.
The aim of the package is to strengthen the 18 district cooperative banks and 7,768 farmers cooperative mandalis," Modi said.
The state government has already issued a notification in this regard, the Chief Minister said after distributing insurance money to depositors of liquidated Visnagar Mahila Cooperative bank.
With BJP rebels organising farmers meet across the state to highlight anti-farmers policy of the state government, the package announced by Modi is aimed at wooing the farmer's community, political analysts said.
