Wednesday, October 24, 2007 14:51 [IST]

Kathmandu: Nepal has stressed on the need for democratizing the United Nations System and called for fundamental reforms in all principal organs of the UN, including the Security Council.

Nepal feels that democratization of international relations and the UN system would inject a greater degree of legitimacy to the UN process, said Foreign Minister Sahana Pradhan addressing a function organized in Kathmandu to mark the UN Day.

It is essential to reform the UN system including the Security Council and the reforms will require a greater amount of energy, resources and attention from the member states, she added.

Appreciating the UN secretary general for paying personal attention in facilitating the peace process in Nepal, she expressed the hope that Nepal will continue to receive enhanced level of goodwill, understanding, support and assistance in the areas of rehabilitation, reconstruction and development in the post conflict situation.

The UN should address many challenges including climate change, growing poverty, terrorism, arms race, HIV/AIDS, human trafficking and narcotic drugs, which have collateral impacts on public health and social stability with a great bearing on peace and security of nations, she noted.
