15 sentenced to life for riots in Kanpur

Kanpur: Fifteen persons including a lawyer accused of burning nine persons alive in the communal riots that broke out here after the demolition of the Babri Mosque in December, 1992 were sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court here today.

Additional District Judge S M Hasim gave his verdict today on the killing of nine persons in the riots including four of a family who were burnt to death.

Four days after the demolition of the mosque, on December 10, the accused had killed nine persons including Chote Miyan, his wife Salma, mother-in-law Akhtari Beghum and his two and a half-year-old son Saddam in Gujaini locality of the town.

There were 26 witnesses in the case including Siddiq, the brother of Chote Miya who was killed along with three other members of his family by the rioters.
