Agartala: Thirty seven years after his death, the mortal remains of Hamidur Rahaman would reach Bangladesh, for whose independence he fought and died at the age of 17.
A five-member Bangladesh team will arrive here on November 6 at Dhalai district headquarters Ambassa to take back the remains of Rahaman, who earned a gallantry award of the Bangladesh Government posthumously, official sources said today.
Rahaman, a soldier of the then 1st East Bengal Regiment of the Mukti Yuddha Bahini (Liberation Force) was killed in 1970 when he attacked a base camp of the Pakistani army alone at Paharmura in Sylhet, armed only with three hand grenades and a carbine. He destroyed two heavily guarded sentry posts but died while attacking the third and the final post.
His body was carried inside India at Purbajoypara, a remote tribal hamlet in Dhalai district, about 35 km from the border, by one Rahaman Mian who laid his body to rest in accordance with Muslim burial customs.
A team from Bangladesh had visited the burial spot at Purbajoypara which had gone under water due to development of a natural lake there.
The sources said Tripura government has assured the team all help for recovering the remains of the soldier.
Bangladesh wanted to take back the remains by the first week of December ahead of the 37th Victory Day celebration of Bangladesh liberation on December 16.
