New Delhi: Putting up a strong defence of the Indo-US nuclear deal, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said "some delay" does not mean "we have reached the end of the road".
Acknowledging the domestic "problems" over implementation of the deal, he said efforts were underway to evolve a consensus as "in democracy, ultimately you have to take all those who are supporting you along with you."
Singh, who was addressing the press along with visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel, maintained that the Indo-US nuclear agreement was "an honourable deal" which is "good for India, good for the world and good for the cause of non-proliferation."
Noting that the government had "run into some problems domestically" over the deal, he said "efforts are on to evolve a broad based national consensus. That process is underway."
He said his government was committed to see that "the process is carried forward" but refused to speculate the result of the efforts to evolve the consensus.
"There is some delay but we have not, I think, reached the end of the road," asserted the Prime Minister, whose government is facing intense opposition from the Left allies over operationalisation of the deal.
