Amritsar: A man wanted for the killing of a youth last Thursday after which angry Dalits went on the rampage in this city today surrendered before the police.
Harinder Singh alias Bony, who is a relative of local MLA Raminder Singh Bloria, allegedly gunned down the Dalit youth Shankar Das following an altercation late on the night of October 25.
Senior Superintendent of Police Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh told reporters that Bony had committed a murder in the US in the early 1990s but his sentence was commuted, because of his "impaired condition", to 15 months imprisonment and the authorities deported him back to India.
He was also charged and later acquitted in several murder and attempt to murder cases, he said. The SSP said a "lookout notice" was sent to all airports of the country, an arrest warrant issued for Bony and police teams had conducted raids at various places, including Delhi and Chandigarh, before he surrendered.
Authorities had also initiated the process of attachment of his moveable and immoveable properties and frozen his bank accounts, Singh said.
A day after the killing of Das, hundreds of Dalits protested outside the main police station demanding the arrest of Bony, smashed wind-screens of nearly 50 cars and vandalised over 100 motorcycles besides stoning window panes at Hall Bazaar market.
