Left not impressed by Mukesh’s feat

New Delhi: The Left is not enthralled at Mukesh Ambani becoming the richest person in the world or the Sensex zooming to 20K.

Taking time off the nuclear row, the comrades on Tuesday launched scathing attack on the UPA government for its failure to address the distress of farmers across the country.

At a Left-sponsored farmers’ rally here, CPI general secretary AB Bardhan said, “Today we have learnt from the newspapers that the richest man in the world is Mukesh Ambani and the Sensex has crossed 20K... but my dear prime minister and finance minister Chidambaram, Ambani may have become the richest man in the world, the Sensex may have plummeted, but that does not reflect the well-being of the farmers and the downtrodden.”

“This high growth rate you and your finance minister always talk about is not making the poor rich and the downtrodden economically better, rather this economic policy is forcing farmers to commit suicide.”

Curiously, NCP leader DP Tripathi also joined the rally meant to back the farmers and bash the government despite the fact that the Left leaders have been criticising NCP chief and agriculture minister Sharad Pawar for being indifferent to the farmers’ plight.

Tripathi did not talk about Sensex or Ambani but farmers’ distress and the need to address them. Bardhan’s party colleague Atul Anjan said the “Sensex might bring some moolah to the coffer of the Congress and the government, but has done nothing for the poor. When UPA assumed power atta was sold for Rs9 per kg and now it is Rs16 per kg. Similarly the price of arhar dal shot up from Rs27 pkg to Rs60 now…”

RSP leader Abani Roy blasted the government for not addressing the grievances of the farmers.
