Floods claim 21 lives in AP

Hyderabad: Heavy rains and flood in Andhra Pradesh have claimed 21 lives in the last three days even as state government today intensified relief operations in four most affected districts.

Sixteen persons were killed in Nellore district alone, which is the worst affected, while four persons were killed in Kadpa district, and one in Chittoor district.

Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy is likely to undertake an aerial survey of affected areas tomorrow, sources said. For the third consecutive day, life remained paralysed in Nellore and three other affected districts as dozens of villages remained inundated, while transport and communication links were yet to be restored.

According to weather office, low-pressure area remained stationary in the Bay of Bengal keeping the monsoon vigorous.

Heavy rains were likely to occur at most places in Nellore, Prakasam, Guntur and Krishna districts in coastal region and at many places in Telangana region during the next 24-hours, it added.
