Islamabad: A bomb blast ripped through shops selling CDs in a market in Peshawar in northwestern Pakistan today though no one was injured. The explosion damaged several shops in the Hayatabad Karkhano market. Capital City Police Officer Abdul Majeed Marwat said the explosive device was planted near an electric pole close to shops selling CDs.
The bomb went off at around 7 pm when the market was almost closed. "It was a low intensity device which was meant to create panic and harassment in the area," Marwat told state-run APP news agency. Police officials said the bomb could have caused more damage if it had gone off during the day. Police cordoned off the area and searched the area for clues.
Militants in the North West Frontier Province have carried out a string of bomb attacks against shops selling CDs, saying that movies and music recorded on the discs are against the ideals of Islam. They have also threatened the owners of such shops to shut down their establishments.
