New Delhi: In a surprise move on Friday, the BJP took a pro-US stand. The BJP criticised CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat’s for saying that the US was trying to make India its strategic ally to counter China.
The party also hinted that it was favourably inclined towards strengthening of relations with the superpower.
The BJP was also cautious to add that the party’s opposition to the Indo-Us nuclear deal was based on its assessment that it was detrimental to the India’s strategic interests.
“We oppose the deal because we feel that the agreement is not in our national interest. Unlike the Left we are not guided by any anti-US feelings,” BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
The party has no objections over strategic tie, like joint Indo-US military exercises, “if they are in national interest”, he said.
On Karat’s open support for Karat, Prasad said: “Karat’s observations that Indo-US ties were designed to corner China exposes the duplicity of the CPI(M). It proves that the Left’s interest lies in China and not India.”
