Mumbai: More than 1,100 litres of adulterated milk was seized in a raid carried out by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) along with the Oshiwara police on Friday morning. The raid also led to the arrest of four people.
With the coming festive season, FDA had intensified its drive against adulteration. Officials were keeping watch in areas where such activities are suspected to be carried out. FDA authorities raided the Anand Nagar slum on New Link Road in Jogeshwari and arrested Venkatesh Sataiyya, Vimlesh Tirupalli, Parshuram Konda and Mansha Shrinivas. Two of their associates are also wanted in the case.
The four were booked under Sections 272 (adulteration of food or drink intended for sale), 273 (sale of noxious food or drink), 420 (cheating) among other sections of the Indian Penal Code. They have also been charged under various sections of the Food Prohibition Act of the FDA.
The arrested sold adulterated packaged milk mixed with water to unsuspecting customers. They would reseal empty packets of trusted milk brands like Aarey, Mahanand, Krishna and Mother Dairy with their adulterated milk. “We have been keeping a watch in several areas in the city to nab those involved in the milk adulteration racket. We had received information that such activities were being carried out in Anand Nagar, after which we laid a trap,” said PR Uttarwar, joint commissioner of the FDA.
Uttarwar said the city consumes over 60 lakh litre of milk a day. However, he said, adulteration was rampant, especially during festivals.
