Washington: The US State Department today refused to give immediate reaction to the imposition of a state of emergency in Pakistan, saying any comment would only come from Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice who is in Turkey.
A State Department official maintained that whatever the reaction is going to be will be coming from Rice or the party travelling with her. On her way to Turkey, the Secretary of State had earlier made it known that Washington is against "any extra-constitutional" methods in the country.
Rice was asked if she or President George W Bush had advised Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf not to declare martial law under any circumstances.
"I'm not going to get into the details of our conversations, but I think it would be quite obvious that the United States wouldn't be supportive of extra-constitutional means," she had said.
