Clinton slams Musharraf for emergency
Wednesday, November 07, 2007 07:33 [IST]

Washington: Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has joined the bandwagon of US leaders opposing emergency rule in Pakistan when she termed the act of President Musharraf as a "terrible mistake". The Democratic front runner for Presidential polls next year stressed that the United States must stand with the people in efforts to destabilise that country, especially the Musharraf regime.

"I oppose the imposition of emergency rule in Pakistan. I think that s been a mistake. It s important for US to stand with the people of Pakistan against the efforts to destabilize the entire country, not just the Musharraf regime," the New York Senator said on CNN.

"... President Musharraf to be silencing political opposition, trying to shut down our free press, imprisoning dissidents, is a terrible mistake, both for Pakistan but also for our mutual interests in trying to root out, defeat and deter Al Qaida and related terrorist elements," she added.
