Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Parishad today censured Khadi Gramodyog Board Chairman Dayara Sen for showing disrespect to Mahatma Gandhi during a function at Firozabad on November 3.
The House adopted the motion after Congress members Ranjeet Singh Judev and Naseeb Pathan raised the matter during Zero Hour.
Sen, who was the chief guest at the function, took strong exception to the picture of Gandhi placed at the podium for garlanding and ordered its removal, Congress members alleged. They further alleged that Sen used foul language against the Father of the Nation.
This had sparked anger among the people who were now burning effigies of Chief Minister Mayawati, the members said.
Terming the incident as serious, Leader of the House and Khadi Gramodyog Minister Swami Prasad Maurya said a report had been sought from the district administration in this regard.
Members belonging to BJP and RLD also condemned the incident after which Leader of the Opposition Ahmed Hasan moved the censure motion.
Later, the House adopted the motion censuring Sen, a political appointee.
