Nandigram: The CPI(M) captured fresh areas in Nandigram where violence broke out again today injuring two persons, while two of those injured yesterday died, taking the toll to four.
Home Secretary P R Roy said in Kolkata that four persons were killed in the last three days, while there were unofficial reports of another person having died.
Roy said CPI(M) cadres captured Mahespur and its adjacent areas in Nandigram.
Altogether 2000 people were rendered homeless in the violence since yesterday, of whom most were Bhumi Ucched Pratirod Committee supporters, the Home Secretary said.
Asked about criticism from CPI(M) state secretary Biman Bose that his remarks on the violence in Nandigram were not based on reality, Roy retorted, "Shall I tell lies? I am speaking the truth."
Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, when asked if the Centre has sought a report on Nandigram, replied in negative. "Centre has not sought any report from us."
The Home Secretary said if the Centre sought a report it would be provided.
East Midnapore Superintendent of Police S Panda said two of the injured in yesterday's violence died in hospital.
Two persons, including a woman, were injured in renewed violence at around noon today. Violence was marked at Tekhalibazar, Maheshpur, Bhangaberia, Sonachura, Satengabari, Gokulnagar and Adhikaripara besides other places, he said.
Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi summoned the Home Secretary and the Director General of police for first hand information on the developments at Nandigram.
