Jaya: There's no such thing called UNPA
Thursday, November 15, 2007 22:04 [IST]

Chennai: Distancing herself from the UNPA, floated by non-Congress and non-BJP parties a few months back, AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa today said there was "no such thing called the Third Front."

Speaking to reporters at the party headquarters here, she refused to take questions on the issue, saying "there is no such thing called the UNPA or the Third Front.... No questions on the UNPA please."

It was in her house here, the front was named as UNPA, but she did not attend recent meetings of the UNPA leaders, obviously due to differences with the front leaders leaning more towards the left parties, without consulting her.

Asked about the Left parties "softening" their stand on the Indo-US Nuclear-deal, she said that as far as the AIADMK was concerned, it was steadfast in opposing the deal.

"I was the first in India to raise the issue. I have been clear in expressing my views and as far as the AIADMK is concerned, the deal itself is not necessary and is bad for the country. It will make India subservient to a foreign power which is unacceptable," she said.

Expressing concern over the violence in Nandigram in West Bengal, she demanded that the Centre intervene to put an end to the violence there.
The Left Government in West Bengal should stop its "oppressive measures," she added.
