Thursday, November 15, 2007 22:45 [IST]

Porayar: Thousands of devotees from various parts of Tamil Nadu thronged the famous Singaravelar temple at Sikkal in Nagai district today in connection with the "Soorasamharam" event of the annual Kanda Sashti festival.

Legend has it that Lord Muruga destroyed Sooraapadman (devil) at Tiruchendur by obtaining the trident (Vel) from Nedunkanniyamman at Sikkal.

Each year, the "Kanda Sashti" festival is celebrated for 10 days. The event of Lord Muruga getting the trident from Amman is celebrated as "Vel Vaangum" festival, which was held last night.

After last night s event, devotees witnessed sweat on the face of Lord Muruga, which is considered a miracle. Every year Lord Muruga's face reportedly becomes completely wet with perspiration.

The "Soorasamharam" event took place this evening. The district administration had made elaborate security arrangements in view of the festival.
