Kathmandu: Nepal Maoists have stepped up pressure on the government to move towards implementing crucial parliamentary resolutions for a new political and electoral system as top leaders of the coalition partners held talks to find a way out of the deadlock ahead of the parliamentary session tomorrow.
The Maoists today organized protest rallies and meetings in Kathmandu and other major parts of the country to build up pressure on the interim government to fulfill their two major demands: declaring Nepal a republic immediately and adopting a fully proportionate electoral system. Traffic on the roads in the capital were disrupted for hours as the Maoists cadres held public meetings and chanted anti-king slogans, demanding the immediate abolition of the monarchy in the Himalayan state.
Maoist chief Prachanda has warned that his Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-Maoist) will launch fresh stir to topple the government if it failed to address its concerns as per the resolution passed by the parliament last month. The country's largest party, Nepali Congress led by Prime Minister G P Koirala, today engaged top leaders of the coalition partners in order to find a way out of the current political deadlock after the Maoists warned to form a new Parliament and a new government through street agitation.
Koirala's party today reiterated its support for a mixed electoral system and declaring Nepal a republic through the first meeting of the constituent assembly election. During a crucial Central Working Committee meeting today, ahead of the winter session of Parliament tomorrow, the NC decided to work for fixing the date for the Constituent Assembly polls at the earliest, Nepali Congress Vice-President Prakash Man Singh said.
