Srinagar: Army today remembered its brave soldiers who laid down their lives while defending the borders at Chushul in Ladakh region during the Sino-Indian war of 1962.
A wreath laying and homage ceremony was held at Chushul to commemorate the battle of Rezangla during the 1962 Sino-Indian war, a defence spokesman said. He said wreaths were placed on behalf of the Chief of Army staff General Deepak Kapoor and the Northern Army Commander, Lt General H S Panag.
Brigadier Om Prakash, the seniormost serving Kumaoni officer in the region and a large number of officers and men paid their tributes and remembered the sacrifices made by the valiant soldiers of 13 Kumaon, the spokesman said. Remembering the supreme sacrifice of the brave soldiers, the spokesman said it was on this day in 1962 that the troops of 13 Kumaon under the command of the legendary Major Shaitan Singh fought valiantly to the true tradition of the Indian Army, standing their ground till death.
Accounts of those who visited Rezangla, three months later stand testimony to this as the dead soldiers were found in their trenches, frozen stiff, but still holding their weapons and grenades in their hands.
