Bangalore: With the fall of the first BJP government in Karnataka, the state has witnessed the collapse of three coalition ministries in a span of 41 months and political expediency ruled the roost in the developments rather than any ideology.
The state, which saw the ushering in of the coalition era after the 2004 assembly elections, delivered a three-way fractured verdict after which Congress and JDS combined to install the first-ever coalition. The Congress-led government headed by N Dharam Singh, after being in office for 20 months, was toppled by former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy who later became Chief Minister by tying up with BJP.
In the wake of JDS refusing to honour the power-sharing pact, BJP pulled down the Kumaraswamy government after it completed 20 months on October 7. Alarmed by the high voltage campaign unleashed against it by BJP over denial of Chief Ministership to it, JDS in a clear move to take the wind out of sails of the saffron party tricked it into power by declaring its support unilaterally.
However, JDS, which felt it has now been absolved of the tag of "betrayers", brought down the BJP government barely eight days after it assumed office. Yeddyurappa was sworn-in as chief minister on November 12 and resigned today as JDS refused to support the motion of confidence moved by Yeddyurappa in the state assembly to prove the majority of his government.
The JD(S) legislature party has issued a whip to its MLAs, asking them not to support the BJP government in the vote of confidence today moved by the Chief Minister Yeddyurappa. The Chief Minister though has expressed confidence that his government will pass the floor test, even as the JD(S) said that the Chief Minister should resign.
Earlier, terming the move of JD(S) to not to support BJP led government in Karnataka as murder of the democracy, BJP president Rajnath SIngh has lashed out at JD(S) and its leadership. He also added that decision in this regard will be taken by Karnataka BJP unit. Karnataka Chief Minister Yeddyurappa has decided to go ahead with motion of confidence in Assembly despite JD(S) decision to oppose it. Adding more to it, BJP president Rajnath Singh said that the party will face elections but will not surrender to anybody. He also added that chief minister Yeddyurappa may resign from the office.
Meanwhile, creating a political chaos once again in Karnataka, the JD(S) decided not to support BJP led government in the state. The decision came after BJP refused to sign an MoU with the party over its 12-point conditions. The party has issued a whip to its MLAs asking them to not to support BJP in today's trust vote. There are possibilities that no JD(S) MLA would be present for BJP's trust vote. The decision was taken in a JD(S) meeting after BJP refused to accept its demands.
