India announces million dollar aid for Bangladesh
Monday, November 19, 2007 23:06 [IST]

New Delhi: India today announced an aid of one million dollar for cyclone-ravaged Bangladesh, where over 3,000 people have died and lakhs have been rendered homeless.
The assistance will consist of relief material including medicine, food items, milk powder, tents, blankets and first aid kits for the affected people, an External Affairs Ministry statement said.

The statement also said that New Delhi was in the process of supplying essential food items to the neighbouring country and will continue to "extend whatever assistance it can at this hour of need. "India has always responded readily to such requests from Bangladesh earlier, the most recent being a few months ago when considerable devastation was caused by mudslides during monsoons," it said.

President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh have already written to their Bangladesh counterparts, expressing grief at the calamity and conveying India s readiness to assist in the relief efforts.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee also spoke with Bangladesh s Foreign Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury and indicated India s readiness to send relief supplies to supplement the efforts of the neighbouring country, it said.
