Cuttack: Orissa High Court has issued a showcause notice to Jammu and Kashmir police asking about the offence committed by the Kashmiri woman and the Oriya migrant worker who were arrested in the state in mid-October. Nazia Banu alias Shehenaz, a 28-year-old mother of four children had fled her husband s home in Kashmir and came here on October 16 with the help of Digambar Bisoi, who hails from Nayagarh district of the state.
As the state government said it had no role in the arrest of the Kashmiri woman and the Oriya migrant, the High Court issued notice to the Budgam police in Jammu and Kashmir yesterday and adjourned the case for November 28. When Justice Indrajit Mohanty wanted to know details of the offence committed by the duo, state government counsel told the court that Bhubaneswar police only assisted JK police in the execution of an non-bailable warrant (NBW) issued by a court there, and identified the investigating officer of the case in SDJM court in the state capital.
"We have no idea about the offence committed by the Kashmiri woman and the migrant worker. We only assisted the JK police and we have no role in it," the government counsel said. The woman, since her arrest, has been staying in a short-stay home in Bhubaneswar while Bisoi is lodged in a local jail. Banu has been refusing to go back to her native place accusing her husband of torturing her.
