Bhutto decision on polls in a day or two
Wednesday, November 21, 2007 02:54 [IST]

Karachi: Former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto today said her Pakistan People's Party will decide in a day or two whether to contest the general election in January. Bhutto, who was speaking after chairing a meeting of the PPP s central executive committee at her residence here, said her party had not yet reached a decision regarding contesting the general election.

She said she wanted to hold talks with leaders of other political parties to ascertain whether everyone can be united for a common agenda. Several of Pakistan s opposition parties, including the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal, Tehreek-e-Insaf and PML-N have said parliamentary polls held in a state of emergency will not be free and fair.

They have said they will hold talks with the PPP, the country s largest party, to decide on whether to boycott the election scheduled for January 8. Besides the PPP s four provincial presidents, today s meeting was attended by central leaders of the party like Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Yousuf Raza Gillani, Jahangir Badar, Raza Rabbani and Sherry Rehman.

Bhutto said the leaders had expressed their opinion at the meeting but a final decision on participating in the polls will be taken in a day or two. She also condemned the arrest of over 100 journalists in Karachi during a protest against the emergency.
