Mayawati plans biggest political rally in Mumbai
Wednesday, November 21, 2007 08:49 [IST]

Mumbai: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati is threatening to hold the mother of all rallies at Shivaji Park here on November 25. Her Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) expects at least one million people to attend behenji’s first major political foray into Maharashtra.

The 50-member state BSP unit has swung into action on a grand scale — erecting a magnificent stage at Shivaji Park, painting the city blue with Mayawati’s cutouts and mobilising the masses from Marathwada, Vidarbha and Thane.

BSP followers from Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have booked up all the hotels and lodges around Dadar and adjoining suburbs. Several hundred vehicles have been pressed into service to bring people from distant villages in Amravati and Aurangabad to Mumbai.

State BSP president Vilas Garud said, “It is definitely going to be the biggest political spectacle as we are trying to rally a crowd of ten lakh people across Maharashtra to attend the function.”

He claimed Congress, NCP, Shiv Sena and BJP leaders who had been sidelined within their organisations are in touch with Mayawati ahead of the 2009
assembly elections.

The largest congregation the city witnesses is on December 6 every year, when Dalits from across the state assemble at Chaitya Bhoomi at Shivaji Park to mark the death anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar.
