Physios demand recognition as doctors
Wednesday, November 21, 2007 17:27 [IST]

Chennai: Physiotherapists today demanded that the Centre should recognise them as doctors, ending the "uncertainity" over their status.

"The Government should immediately announce its decision on this issue for the benefit of the professionals," Vijay Anand, president of Indian Physical Therapists Welfare Association told reporters here.

"The Government should create vacancies for the professionals in public health centres and increase the number of vacancies in district-level hospitals," Anand said. The government should also revise its pay-scale for physiotherapists, he added.

Calling for the formation of a National Physiotherapy Council at the earliest, Anand said it will help in eliminating quacks, who were practising "freely due to the absence of a regulatory body,"
