Wednesday, November 21, 2007 23:29 [IST]

Lahore: The first special train carrying 1,400 Sikh pilgrims from India, who will participate in celebrations marking the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak at Nankana Sahib, arrived at Wagah here today.

Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) chairman Lt Gen (retired) Zulfiqar Ali Khan and Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Sardar Bishon Singh welcomed the pilgrims.

During their stay in Pakistan, the pilgrims will also visit Gurdwara Dera Sahib in Lahore, Gurdwara Succha Sauda in Farooqabad and Gurdwara Rohri Sahib in Aimanabad.

The ETPB chairman told reporters that gurdwaras in Pakistan were renovated last month and are being properly maintained. Walk-through gates and other security measures have been installed around gurdawaras to avoid any untoward incident during the celebrations.

Elaborate arrangements have been made at Wagah railway station to facilitate the Sikh pilgrims. Around 4,000 Sikh pilgrims from India are expected to visit Pakistan for the celebrations at Nankana Sahib.
