Islamabad: A tense calm prevailed today in Pakistan s Kurram Agency after a jirga brokered a truce between warring Shia and Sunni tribesmen following several days of clashes that claimed over 110 lives. Security forces are in control of Parachinar, the headquarters of Kurrum Agency, and life was returning to normal, the army said in a statement. The jirga succeeded in brokering peace after holding talks with elders of both warring groups, officials said.
The jirga has completed a preliminary round of talks with the elders and a second round of talks will be held in a day or two after the burial of those killed in the violence. Some sporadic incidents of violence were reported last night from Sadda, Bailush Khel, Teri Mangel, Paiwar and Sangeena areas.
Elders and security officials visited the violence-hit areas and inspected security arrangements. The administration is also in contact with tribal elders to consolidate peace in the agency. Outsiders have been ordered to leave Parachinar, where the streets are being patrolled by troops. All roads were closed by the security forces.
