Washington: A strong 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck hundreds of kilometers from Chile s Pacific coast, US geologists reported today.

The earthquake, which was 10 km deep, took place last night 2,475 km southwest of Chile's capital Santiago, the US Geological Survey said.

US geologists use the moment magnitude scale, which measures the area of the fault that ruptured and the total energy released.
