Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati today shot down Governor T V Rajeshwar's proposal for police commissionerate system in the state saying it could not be implemented at present as the force was "plagued by evils of Samajwadi Party and BJP regimes in the past".
"BSP is in favour of introducing police commissionerate system in the state but it is not possible to implement it at this juncture as the previous SP and BJP regimes have injected serious evils in the force," she told reporters here. Until those evils are removed from the force, the system can not be introduced, she said.
Speaking at the ongoing police week, the Governor had yesterday suggested that police commissionerate system be tried in a couple of cities and if successful it could be introduced elsewhere in the state. In the police commissionerate system, which has been envisaged for important cities in the country to make policing more people-friendly, the police commissioner, assistant police commissioner and deputy police commissioner would have magisterial powers.
Mayawati said she wanted to introduce the commissioner system when she became the chief minister for the first time in 1995, but could not do so as it was a coalition government. "It can be introduced now as the party has absolute majority but the force suffers from serious evils," she said. "You (media) know them well... I do not want to repeat," she said. When the government feels that these evils are no longer there, the commissionerate system will be introduced, she said without giving a timeframe.
