Moderate earthquake jolts parts of Pakistan
Sunday, December 02, 2007 18:53 [IST]

Islamabad: A moderate earthquake today jolted the Pakistani capital and northwestern parts of the country, sparking panic among people.

The meteorological office said the temblor measured 5.0 on the Richter scale and had its epicenter in the Hindukush mountains, 350 km north of Peshawar, the capital of North West Frontier Province. There were no reports of casualties or damage to property from the tremors which created panic among people this evening.

Parts of northern Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir are located in a zone that is prone to earthquakes. Over 73,000 people were killed, thousands injured and millions displaced in the devastating 7.6 intensity quake that rocked Pakistan and northern India on October 8, 2005.
