I'm being threatened: Sohrab's brother
Sunday, December 09, 2007 12:37 [IST]

New Delhi: Augmenting political tensions in Gujarat over Sohrabuddin's encounter, his brother Rubabuddin on Sunday claimed that he is receiving threatening calls and that the security provided to him is not adequate.

Rubabuddin, who moved Supreme Court on Friday seeking registration of FIR against Narendra Modi for his remarks on Sohrabuddin, said he had informed state police about the threats to him and his family.

"I have been receiving threatening calls from unknown numbers. The callers are asking me to take back the case or else I along with the family members would be killed. I fear for the life of my family members," he said here.

He said one of the calls was made from Kolkata recently. "I have informed the police and IB officials. However, no action was taken in this regard," said Rubabuddin, who lives in Madhya Pradesh and was here in connection with a function.

Noting that Rajasthan government has revoked the suspension of Superintendent of Police Dinesh Kumar, one of the accused in Sohrabuddin's encounter, he said "the officer can do anything to me".

His comments came days after Modi justified the killing of Sohrabuddin allegedly in a fake encounter, triggering war of words between Congress and BJP.

Rubabuddin has been provided two security personnel -- one at residence and one escorting him -- on the directions of the Supreme Court.

"They are not sufficient as one person cannot look after the security round the clock. The security should be increased," he said.

On Modi's comments justifying Sohrabuddin's killing, he said: "It is really painful to hear such words. There is no constitution in Gujarat and people are not safe there."

He said the Election Commission should prevent Modi from contesting the state assembly election due next week.

"I met the Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami and appealed to him personally to stop Modi from contesting elections. It is really unfortunate that people responsible for murder of many innocents is allowed to contest," he said.

However, Sohrabuddin said he has full faith on the judiciary and hope to get the justice in the case.
