Ahmedabad: With just three days left for final phase of Gujarat Assembly polls, the spat between Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi grew ugly after the Chief Minister publicly taunted the Prime Minister for his "unfamiliarity" among the masses.
Modi also dared Singh to take action against Congressmen involved in 1984 anti-Sikh riots cases. Singh was the target of fresh salvos from Modi who at an election meeting in Bapunagar area here asked the crowd, "Do you recognise the Prime Minister?"
"I am talking about Manmohan Singh. He is our Prime Minister", he said in an apparent attempt to belittle Singh. Adressing a series of rallies in North and Central Gujarat, Modi said "Congress people do not take his name but we have to remember that he is our Prime Minister."
"Yesterday, our Prime Minister had come here. Yes, I am talking about Dr Manmohan Singh. But you don t know him. You only know Sonia Gandhi. So you should all know that we have a Prime Minister called Dr Manmohan Singh," Modi told the crowd jocularly, reminding the people that it was not Sonia Gandhi but Manmohan Singh who was the Prime Minister.
Referring to Prime Minister's promise to have a re-look into post-Godhra riot cases if Congress comes to power, Modi said, "I want to ask him, whether he has the guts to punish those Congressmen involved in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots".
"If you cannot punish them, then there is no point in coming here (to Gujarat) and wasting your time." "Don't try to threaten Gujarat," the BJP leader said.
He also slammed Gandhi and Singh for engaging in a "false propaganda" against the BJP-ruled state. "The Reserve Bank of India, Planning Commission and international banks are singing paeans about the achievements of Gujarat", Modi said.
