Thursday, December 13, 2007 13:42 [IST]

Thane: An examination of water samples in the district has revealed that 8.58 per cent of them were polluted and not fit for drinking.

This was disclosed at a review meeting of the Nava Sanjivani Yojana for the district held here yesterday under the chairmanship of State Tribal Development Minister Vijaykumar Gavit.

The meeting was informed that a total of 1,614 samples of water drawn from various sources in the district adjoining Mumbai were tested for their fitness and it was found that 132 samples were not potable.

The worst off was Bhiwandi taluka. Of the 41 samples drawn this year in Bhiwandi, 24 were found to be unfit.

Last year, all together 1,920 samples were drawn of which 205, or 10.68 per cent, were found unfit for consumption, but this year that figure has dropped to 8.58 per cent.
