PPP says jammers provided to Benazir didn't work
Thursday, December 13, 2007 23:34 [IST]

Islamabad: The Pakistan People's Party today alleged that jammers provided to its chief Benazir Bhutto to protect her from possible bomb attacks "did not function at all" during a recent journey to the restive North West Frontier Province.

In a letter to the interior secretary, Bhutto's security adviser Rehman Malik asked the government to provide adequate security to Bhutto, including functional jammers, to protect her at public meetings during her election campaign.

Malik, a former chief of the Federal Investigation Agency, alleged the jammers "did not function at all" during Bhutto s journey from Islamabad to Mardan in NWFP on Tuesday.
"I would like to bring to your notice that the jammers provided by the government to cover the security of Benazir Bhutto, former Prime Minister of Pakistan and chairperson of PPP, during her journey from Islamabad to Mardan on 11.12.2007 in the afternoon did not function at all," he wrote.

"The same was brought to the notice of Brig Javed Iqbal Cheema of the ministry of interior today. It is understood from the recent message of Brig Javed Iqbal Cheema that yet another serious threat of suicidal attempt has been received by the government in which Benazir Bhutto and Rehman Malik, Security Advisor, will be the prime targets." In a separate letter, Malik asked the interior secretary to update the PPP on progress in the investigation into the October 19 suicide attacks on Bhutto's homecoming rally in Karachi that killed nearly 140 people.
