Jammu: The JD(U) today demanded scrapping of the centre's SEZ policy, alleging that over 40 crore marginal farmer families were struggling for survival after being deprived of their fertile lands.
"We oppose SEZ and demand its repeal immediately. Fertile land belonging to marginal farmers is being converted into concrete jungles after being acquired for MNCs," JD(U) General Secretary Javed Rana told reporters here.
He described SEZ as "an invasion of corporate and trade sectors on lush agricultural lands to deprive farmers" and said over 40 crore families were directly affected by the policy and struggling for their livelihood.
The acquisition of their lands by MNCs had also resulted in increased unemployment, Rana said.
