Naxalism taking shape as intl problem: Nitish
Friday, December 21, 2007 00:27 [IST]

New Delhi: Naxalism is not only a provincial problem but has taken shape of an inter-state and international problem, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said during the Chief Ministers meeting on Internal Security here today. "The Central Government should help the state government in tackling naxal problem just like terrorism," he said.

Expressing his views on the ongoing naxal problem, he said it is not an exaggeration to say that it is an international problem. We must keep in mind that our boundaries touch Nepal and we are very near to Bangladesh. Incidents taking place in these countries concern us most. The Bihar Chief Minister said naxalism is not totally a problem of the police, it has to be tackled on various fronts and at various levels.

He said the government initiated a test project "Apki Sarkar Apke Dwar" to tackle this problem. It was launched at Sikaria Village of Jehanabad district, a place made famous because of the near total naxal dominance there in the past.

The project involves district Panchayats to ensure the safety of people. "I have instructed my police force to take only remedial and retaliatory action. No offensive action will be taken and individuals will not be targetted," Kumar said. He said the present state government inherited a system which was in good disarray. "We have been trying to get this system back on the rails and trying to ensure good governance".
