New Delhi: There is no immediate threat of escalation in terrorist infiltration into India in the wake of the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, but concerns
about VVIP security have increased, especially in the light of the upcoming New Year and Republic Day celebrations.
Sources told DNA that jehadi elements within Pakistan would be looking at consolidating their positions there. "People (extremists) will try and occupy
more space there, not move out," says an intelligence bureau official.
Throughout the day the IB, the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), and Army among others held several rounds of consultations, over possible fallout of the assassination and threats posed to India.
The assessment of no immediate increase in terrorist activities or infiltration into India is "not untrue," says former IB chief Ajit Doval. He says what is possible is that those "high value members" of terror groups could sneak into India to avoid the imminent state crackdown in Pakistan. Doval says ISI could instruct their terrorist contacts to sneak out into Indian side or somewhere else to hide away from a possible crackdown.
An aggressive hunting of terrorists is imminent in Pakistan, he believes. Analysts within agencies believe that there is only a remote possibility of
Pakistani state elements triggering some terrorist action in India. Even a high-profile terrorist attack in India will not help Pakistan get out of the
mess in the wake of the assassination.
Today, the biggest concern for Indian agencies is about the security of VVIPs, given the daring attack on Bhutto. "Not that there is any such chance, but the attack is a warning about what is possible when it comes to VVIP security," says another official.
He said there would be heightened alert during the ongoing New Year and the Republic Day functions.
