'Bhutto party won't accept vote delay'
Monday, December 31, 2007 09:50 [IST]

benazir_400Naudero: Slain Benazir Bhutto's party will not accept any delay in Pakistan's January 8 elections, a senior official said after indications that the authorities were considering a postponement.

Opposition leader Bhutto's husband, the new co-chairman of her Pakistan People's Party, said earlier that it would take part in the polls despite her assassination on Thursday.

A spokesman for the country's former ruling party however warned earlier that a delay of up to 12 weeks for the polls was "realistic" and said his party had stopped campaigning.

"We will not accept any postponement of the elections and we want them as per schedule by January 8," PPP Senator Safdar Abbasi told AFP. "If postponed or delayed we will devise our future course of action."

Former premier Nawaz Sharif's party has also said that it will contest the elections, abandoning plans for a boycott.
