Kashmir valley continues to freeze
Monday, December 31, 2007 13:42 [IST]

Srinagar: Kashmir valley continued to reel under intense cold wave as the night temperature remained seven degrees below the freezing point, resulting in a thick layer of ice over the Dal lake.

For the second consecutive day, night temperature in Srinagar settled at minus 7.2 degrees Celsius, which was the coldest of the season so far, a Met department official said.

The night temperature was more than five degrees below normal for this part of the year, he said. The sharp decline in minimum temperature has resulted in freezing of the Dal lake. The banks of the Dal lake have frozen five to six inches.

Taps in the city also froze overnight but the water supply was restored as it warmed, with day temperatures staying around five degrees above normal.
However, the days in the valley are unusually warm at 10.9 degrees Celsius.

The abnormal day and night temperatures in the valley has caused an extended dry spell in the area.
