Shantiniketan: A girl student of Visva Bharati university was shot dead by an unidentified youth who also tried kill himself at the girls hostel today.

Police said the youth entered Sri Sadan Hostel and went to the room of the third-year girl student, Saswati Pal, and fired at her from point blank range. He then turned the gun on himself.

Students rushed the victim and the youth to Bolpur Sub-divisional Hospital. The girl was declared dead by doctors while her killer was admitted with serious injury, police said. Pal, a student of Rabindrasangeet, was from Ghatal in West Midanpore district.

This is the third incident of campus slaying within a month. Earlier this month, a student of a government school of Satna in Madhya Pradesh was shot dead by a senior schoolmate. In December 2007,a 14-year-old student was killed by two of his classmates in Gurgaon.
