Baghdad: A suicide bomber blew himself up in central Baghdad today, killing at least five people at an event where a civilian organisation was giving out presents to soldiers, security officials said.
The attack in the neighbourhood of Karrada struck as gifts were distributed to mark Iraqi Army Day.
An AFP photographer who witnessed the attack said that the suicide bomber struck a group of soldiers who were singing and chanting outside the building where the event was taking place. "They were dancing when the attacker exploded himself," he said.
Interior and defence ministry officials said at least five people, mostly soldiers, were killed, and at least seven more were wounded.
