Mumbai: The second phase of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) is aimed at buying state-of-the-art rolling stock, including air-conditioned rakes, and laying additional tracks along Western, Central and Harbour to segregate local and long-distance trains.
The project is gathering dust for the past couple of years following a policy spat between the government and the railways over recovering surcharge from passengers. The project involves the creation of separate tracks for fast suburban locals and long-distance trains. It also involves the task of resettlement, building new lines, maintaining facilities and importing new technology.
The World Bank is likely to fund Rs2,500 crore in the Rs4,509-crore project. The remaining amount will be borne by the government and the railways on a 50-50 partnership. The Bandra-Kurla railway link and the fifth line between Kurla and CST is expected to be included in the second phase.
