Virbhadra asks Himachal PCC chief to quit
Monday, January 07, 2008 08:53 [IST]

Shimla: With a section of Congress leaders gunning for his head after party's defeat in the Himachal Pradesh assembly elections, former chief minister Virbhadra Singh on Sunday asked state unit chief to quit.

"I accepted Congress defeat in HP gracefully and resigned from the chief ministership without any loss of time... She (Viplov Thakur) shall also do the same and quit her PCC post," Singh said.

The five time former chief minister of state described as "unfortunate" the Pradesh Congress Chief's reported statement that it was defeat of the Congress government and not of the party.

"Party and the government are one and are jointly responsible for defeat/victory in any election... It is unfortunate that she is making a distinction between the two after loss in the assembly poll," he said.

Singh, 73, termed as "false and motivated" statements of a few defeated Congress candidates blaming him for their drubbing.

"These are false and motivated statements. it is not difficult to know who are the people behind this political game," he said.

"I have been a committed soldier of the Congress party and can never think of working against it at any level," Singh said.

Asked if he was in race for becoming leader of the opposition in the state assembly, Singh said: "It is on the party high command to decide."

"I have left myself to the disposal of the party high command and whatever role I am assigned I will perform sincerely," he said, adding he has never run for any post.
