MUMBAI: The anti-corruption bureau (ACB) arrested a police sub-inspector attached with Mira Road police station for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs50,000 from a builder.
Shafique Shaikh was caught while accepting the bribe from a builder named Adil Khan. This is the second time in a year that a Mira Road policeman was arrested. About ten months ago, a police sub-inspector named Vilas Jadhav from the same police station was arrested by the ACB.
Khan is embroiled in a court case over a property with another builder Akbar Khan. Adil Khan was occupying five flats in a building near Asmita Supermarket in Mira Road.
He claimed the flats belonged to him under a deal between him and Akbar Khan. But the latter wanted him to vacate the property and the Mira Road police were directed earlier to get the flats vacated under the Maharashtra Rental Act.
Police registered a case against Adil Khan and his family. Khan, who was away to another place, was told by his family that the sub-inspector had demanded Rs1 lakh to settle the case.
Adil Khan spoke to the sub-inspector sometime back and agreed to pay him Rs50,000, if he helped him. Meanhwile, he lodged a complaint with the ACB against Shaikh.
On Saturday night, Shaikh called Khan with the cash at the Naya Nagar police post and walked into the ACB’s trap.
“We arrested Shaikh while he was accepting the cash from Adil Khan,” said inspector VH Jagdale at the Thane office of the ACB. “Another accused in the case is Constable Digambar Shete, who is a writer for Shaikh. Shete is a resident of Thane and will be arrested soon,” said Jagdale.
Shaikh was produced in a Thane court on Sunday and was remanded in police custody till Wednesday.
