Mumbai: Two people were killed and two injured in separate accidents in the city in the past 24 hours. One person was killed and two injured when the driver of a Tata Sumo (MH-04-DE-2651) lost control and hit five auto rickshaws lined in a queue on the Western Express Highway in Andheri.
Kapildev Shamji Prasad, 22, was taken to Cooper Hospital but he died of his injuries before admission. Two auto drivers with slight injuries were discharged after giving first aid. The driver, Vikas Sawant, 32, lives in Jogeshwari and runs a travel agency.
Sawant has been charged with rash and negligent driving. He will be produced in court on Monday.
“Immediately after the incident, the driver fled leaving his vehicle. We found him in his home,” said Harwinder Kaur Waraich, assistant commissioner of police, Vile Parle police station. Another officer said that Sawant had dozed off at the wheel after dropping a passenger at Bandra.
In another incident, a 77-year-old man was killed after he was hit by a car (MH-43-R-7432) on the Sion-Trombay Road on Saturday night. Mahavir Khurana of Govandi was trying to cross the road when he was hit.
He was taken to Shatabdi Hospital in Mankhurd but he too died of his injuries before admission. The driver, Ajay Natrajan, 29, has been charged with rash and negligent driving.
Natrajan, however, did not flee. He accompanied the victim and his family to hospital, said Balasaheb Panchundkar, senior police inspector, Chembur police station.
